Calvary Health Care Adelaide

Palliative Care

Established in 1976, the Mary Potter Hospice has developed an excellent reputation in palliative care for people with terminal illness through the skilled and dedicated services provided by our doctors, nurses and pastoral care, all of whom are supported by a committed team of volunteers.

Admission to the hospice may be primarily for pain control and treatment of other
symptoms, or for respite where home carers can be relieved of the responsibility of full time care for a period of time. A significant proportion of patients are able to return home.

Accommodation

The Mary Potter Hospice is a purpose built unit of Calvary featuring 14 private rooms with ensuites, and one two bed share room. Each room opens onto an individual courtyard and is large enough to accommodate a family member who may wish to stay overnight. Two lounge areas are available for visitors and a chapel is open 24 hours a day for prayer or quiet contemplation.

Counseling and Support Services

Apart from the support provided throughout the normal day for each patient and their family, pastoral care and general counseling is available for all patients and their significant others. A comprehensive bereavement counseling service may continue for the family for a further 12 months if required. For further information, please contact the Hospice at any time on: 8239 9298 or email:

Central Adelaide Palliative Outreach Service

Medical and nursing care may continue at home which allows patients to remain in the care of their families and in familiar surroundings. The Central Adelaide Palliative Outreach Service is a consultative service supporting families and other service providers such as RDNS in the home. There is 24-hour access for emergency issues. The nurses co-ordinate the patient's care within the home with regard to:

  • Continually assessing and monitoring the patient's progress
  • Liaison with the patient's local doctor regarding pain control and any other treatment being undertaken
  • Assessing and monitoring the needs of the family and their ability to provide and maintain continuous patient care
